Three Tools for Managing Mood2 min read

This post will be a little different than my previous posts because it’s more stream-of-consciousness casual writing. It’s not intended to be optimized for search engines. It’s more intended to improve my writing skills.

As Justin Mares puts it in this post, “every successful person I admire writes in some form”. I am going to use this blog as a tool to document my thoughts on a more public forum. As of now, there’s a small number of people who I know currently that would care to read this.

The intention of this article and those that follow is to do at least some small portion of the following:

  1. Improve writing skills
  2. Better communicate my thoughts

It’s currently 7pm, Saturday 7/1/2023. I have two job interviews next week. I have been unemployed for 3 months. I plan to spend much of my time Monday and Tuesday preparing for these interviews and applying to more jobs.

The job search has been challenging to say the least. However, one tool that helps people manage anxiety and stress is writing. This same tool is what my roommate who was in prison for 3 years used when he lost everything.

When all a person has is sitting in a prison cell for 23 hours a day, they quickly are forced to confront that person in the mirror and think about their life choices.

His friends and family left him. He was coming down from a heroine addiction. He was isolated from the world and was completely broke.

At that point in his life he learned a lot about himself. He wrote letters daily to the people he cared about, even though those letters came back rejected. He exercised his body daily. He read books.

The 3 tools that helped my roommate manage his intense depression and anxiety in prison were:

  1. Writing
  2. Reading
  3. Exercise

One doesn’t need to go to prison to start using these tools. These tools can have an impact on every single person’s life, no matter their progress. I’d have so much joy seeing more people utilizing these 3 tools in their everyday lives.
